Pointe au Baril is a community in the Canadian province of Ontario , located on the east coast of Georgian Bay. Pointe au Baril was named after the barrel on the point that originally s marked the treacherous entry to the main channel from the open water of Georgian Bay.
Early fur traders from Penetanguishene apparently lost a canoe near the point. Their canoe included a barrel of whiskey that was found by stranded traders the next spring. After a drinking spree the barrel was left on the point as a beacon. French mariners were soon calling it Pointe-au-Baril.
Later this marker was improved to include a lantern in the barrel that would be lit by the first fisherman returning inland to light the way for the rest of the boats. Highway 69 follows the same path as the railway and they both run past the east tip of what is known as the Main Channel.
This channel is a well marked route from the village to the lighthouse. The village has a North Shore and a South Shore road but islander travel is by boat. The village is referred to as The Station by most residents. Pointe au Baril Station is well suited for launching water craft and is supported by many marinas and a substantial public dock.
The point is lit by the recently automated lighthouse. This historic lighthouse opens its doors for tours in the summer months. The Pointe au Baril firetower lookout was erected in the s to detect forest fires. This 80 foot light-steel tower was part of the Parry Sound Fire District tower system. It stood near the centre of the village, just west of the railway tracks and near the bay on a small hill. When aerial fire fighting techniques were employed by the province many of the towers like this one were disassembled in the early s.
The footings, however, are still there to this day. Pointe au Baril became a community to support commercial fishing in the s. The last fishing operation based in Pointe au Baril was shut down in the s.
A lumber industry existed in the area during these same years. The pine , hemlock and yellow birch forestry ended in the s, shortly after the end of World War II. The area is now primarily a cottage community on Highway The channels and islands of the region make it a boating , fishing and islander paradise. It has also become a destination for snowmobiling in the winter months. Among the many islands there is the historic Ojibway Club resort.
The population grows from a winter low of about to to a summer high of or more. Additional growth is expected in the future as Highway is extended past the community.
With the demolition of Larry's Tavern for the expansion of the highway, there remains one restaurant, The Haven, which is open all year, The Harbour View, which is only open during the summer months and the Shell Station Deli. There are also two chip wagons located in Pointe au Baril, one open only during the summer, while the other remains open all year. Pointe au Baril has a community centre with a library in it.
The town also offers an ice rink and playground. Pointe au Baril also has a Nursing Station and an Emergency response team. The area was explored by Samuel de Champlain in A monument was erected in the s to commemorate his travels through the area. It can be found near the newly renovated Ojibway Club , a favoured gathering place for many of the islanders.

The islands are a wonderland for boaters and fishing. I am sure these folks would fix that too, if they could. David and Blanche were wonderful hosts who ensured that we had all we needed for a great weekend. The cabin is clean, cozy and well equipped. They were very accommodating with the guests we had over one evening and brought over more blankets for them to use. Thank you David and Blanche! With a small playground and toys, the cottage is most ideal for families with children.
We used the cottage as we were working near by, it is a bit secluded but is right on the lake with a handful of other cottages close by. Very nice place and was a great little get away. Would definitely like to come back here. Michelle has a beautiful cottage overlooking a beautiful river that leads out to the lake, a perfect spot for canoeing and kayaking.
I personally enjoyed the dock down by the river where I just read and sun-bathed. And in the evenings my family and I had fires by the water or a barbecued. All in all, it honestly was a home away from home. Michelle was easy to get a hold of and quick to respond. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone who wants to re-connect with nature and enjoy a quiet time away with the family. This is a great place to stay if you're looking for a quiet cottage weekend with easy beach access.
Comfortably fits 5 people, direct access to the river paddle-boat included! Bring what you need with you as the nearest bigger town and shops is a 40 minute drive away. The view of the lagoon is really beautiful during the day and in the evening. We did tidy the cottage and the BBQ when we arrived and settled in nicely.
Michelle was easy to get a hold of and answered all our questions. The Burns family cottage was a wonderful place to enjoy some family time and relaxation. Sean is easy to communicate with and available to answer any questions you may have during your stay.
The cottage is clean and the DVD collection is handy for cozy nights or rainy days. Located on a quiet little inlet with great fishing and plenty of beautiful photo opportunities. We will be back next year for sure! This is a great place for a weekend away, clean cottage with everything you need on a very quiet bay with good access to Georgian bay, fishing is good in the area as promised.
This is the perfect place for a cottage weekend. This is a lovely cottage in a great location, very private but not secluded, off the beaten track but not too far. As is common in cottage rentals, but not all airbnb's, they ask you to take your garbage to the dump that's 3 minutes down the road - it's not a big deal, but be aware and pack your car to leave space for the stinky garbage as you leave. There's a dock and peddle boat and a beach within 10 minutes walk.
There's a fire pit, but this year there's a fire ban, which is true for the whole area. The barbeque is huge, you can do full meals there if you like, but there is also a full stovetop and oven. Several ceiling fans keep the place from warming up too much. Kids had bunks, we had a room to ourselves, and a third bedroom we didn't need to use has a double bed, so lots of space. Loved watching the humming birds outside the window! Felt very homey and comfortable. Sean responded quickly to any questions.
There's a clothes line for drying swim things. Overall, everything we needed and a comfortable cottage experience. The cottage is clean and , spacious and comfortable furnished We liked the quite location and being right on the lake.
Great collection of newer movies was available. My nieces kids had a great time with all the toys available and playing in the lake Had an awesome stay and we will be back next year. Really enjoyed our stay. The location was perfect for our purposes. Had a real nice paddle boat into Georgian Bay to see the sun set. We very much enjoyed our stay in Christina's Cottage.
The location was great, and she was excellent at responding to emails and text messages in a timely manner. The Cottage had everything that we needed, we had a ton of luggage which meant we probably didn't need to bring so much luggage.
It doesn't get better than this! We just love the area and this place was beyond our expectations. The views of the Georgian Bay Lake and At the beginning and end of our busy days we seat at terrace and watched the world go by, it was both a visual and auditory treat. Absorbing beautiful Pointe au Baril from this gorgeous Cottage was wonderful and a highlight of our trip. The beds are very comfortable, it was spotlessly clean and the furnishings throughout the Cottage beautiful and the Cottage more than easily accommodated the six of us, it truly was a remarkable experience.
We had a great time here! The island is beside a busy waterway, so there are always boats going by. Be prepared to pay for your ride to the cottage unless you have your own boat. The cottage was well stocked board games, chairs, blankets, kitchen items, etc. The location is very private and view is beautiful. The cottage is quaint and cozy. There is lots of good swimming, exploring, canoeing and kayaking to be done! If you are coming for more than a weekend and don't fancy canoeing yourself about, you will want to bring your own motor boat.
The 6 of us had a perfect weekend getaway at Christina's island cottage. Dreamy location and property, we couldn't have asked for more.
Christina was very warm, friendly and responsive -an excellent host overall. We look forward to returning the next chance we can! Christina was very nice and made sure everything was good for our stay. The cabin has a nice and comfortable atmosphere. Listing is accurate, if anything it does not do it enough justice. This was our second time me and my friends and family went to Christina's cottage.
The place is absolutely our favourite and already feels like home. This time Christina and her husband took us on a boat tour around the area which was amazing! Christina is very easy to communicate with and she was very helpful with everything. The location was beautiful. The island and general area of Georgian Bay were absolutely beautiful. The fishing was very good throughout most times after a bit of experimenting and adapting slow finesse presentation. Ruth was a very gracious host who enhanced the overall experience.
Ruth's cottage was one of the most beautiful I have seen. It's common room had large, open-concept windows, which let us have a beautiful view of the water every day. It is located directly on the hill top, which can be somewhat steep to reach, while climbing the rocks. It was also a little slippery due to the rain during the weekend.
But, as long as you walk slowly and carefully, it will be all right. It is also a great fishing location. From the dock right next to the cottage, we caught a few large mouth bass, that were pretty big in size. Ruth was also very great with communication and responded to all of our questions over the weekend. We would definitely want to come back again soon! It was just amazing. Ruth and her family are incredibly nice and welcoming you, as you belong to their family too.
The house looked exactly like on the pictures. You wake up hearing birds and nature everywhere. If you enjoy quiteness and natur, it is the perfect place for you. We can recommend it to Website hidden by Airbnb is a getaway to heal your soul. Ruth is really kind, and she always answered all my questions quickly. The cottage is perfect and the view is outstanding. My favorite place up north so far. Thank you for everything Ruth. Ruth was a great host her communication was very fast and helpful.
I got lost getting to the dock but she was extremely helpful, patient and very sweet. The view from the cottage was beautiful. The cottage was very homey and warm. I was sad when I had to leave!! I will definitely come back: Great communication and so friendly. Brandon met us on arrival and was also great explaining everything.
And we can't say enough about the cottage. Comfortable beds - very clean. Lots hot water and great water pressure for showers. Only 3 cottages on the island - 1 on other end that you don't even know is there during your stay; the other closer but with enough distance and trees that you still feel privacy no one was there during the week at all, just weekends.
There are decks all around the cottage so there's always a great place to sit and relax with whatever view you choose - even a short path over to a completely separate dock with an entirely different view and gorgeous sunsets. So fun to stay on an island. Marina right nearby for boat we rented. Dan at the marina was also great - very easy to work with him as well.
We've vacationed in Canada many times but were new to this area. It was a great place for a combination of relaxed outdoors at the cottage but not far from all the stores, shops, etc.
We highly recommend both this cottage and the hosts. You will have no issue or disappointment with either one. If future trips take us to that area again, we would definitely go back! The hosts did a great job of both welcoming and informing us about the cottage and the location. The listing was accurate and the cottage was clean and cozy. This is a magical and wonderful place. The cottage is lovely with full amenities with the rustic feel of it is not impeded in any way.
The fireplace is amazing for a cool night and the dock is always in the sun. Leaving is sad but we intend to come back yearly!!! Ooh and our dogs went went wild running this island and am fairly certain that they may refuse to leave! Great place to adventure to. We had the whole island to ourselves. The map to get there was easy to follow. The cottage is beautiful. Lot's of places to fish.
To fully enjoy the place I would recommend having or renting a boat for your journey. They are super responsive with any questions and the dogs absolutely loved the freedom to roam. This is the second time I have stayed at Marc's cottage and with the recent renovations, it did not even seem like the same place! The inside of the cottage is absolutely stunning down to the last details and was such a beautiful place to come back to after a day on the water.
Marc was a great host and we had everything we needed for an amazing stay. You must stay here if you are visiting Georgian Bay - it is so peaceful and relaxing! Marc and Penny's cottage is quaint, rustic, and clean, and sits on an unbelievably gorgeous island. The island and bay are simply spectacular. It offers the perfect mix of privacy, rocky shoreline, gorgeous white pines and sheltered docking. We thoroughly enjoyed the area both for fishing and boating, as well as just hanging out on the island, reading and relaxing.
Marc was very generous with helpful tips regarding the area and how to find good fishing spots. When comparing all the rentals available online in this area, this has to be on your short list.
Marc and his family were really helpful, welcoming and friendly, doing everything they could to make our stay perfect. They were flexible with dates and times, and Marc was always accessible by text or phone, responding pretty much right away. He also provided helpful suggestions on sightseeing and activities to make the most of our trip. The cottage itself is tucked away on a very quiet island with a beautiful waterfront location.
No loud boat traffic, very peaceful, warm water to swim, and a beautiful view to wake up to. We had all the amenities we needed, the cottage was very well newly renovated and comfortable.
Thank you Marc and family! Marc and his entire family were fantastic. Per usual, I made a very late booking and he was very communicative and responsive throughout all my email and text haranguing. Marc made all the arrangements for pick-up and delivery to the island which is ideal and really remote. It was a great experience for the entire family and Marc and his family really helped make that happen.
He was also very helpful with suggestions of things to do and in arranging things like local boat tours and tourist options etc. Will definitely return again and this time with a larger brood. Already looking forward to returning to this idyllic spot in a truly beautiful and scenic area.
A beautiful cottage and bunkie in a fabulous location. This was our first trip to the Pointe Au Baril area and we loved it. Marc's cottage is in a great location - close to everything, but with a private view - no other cottages in sight. The cottage itself is pretty and well maintained.
And the outdoor shower is a huge bonus! Loved it all and hope to be back soon! If you are looking to escape the city and feel off the grid while still having all the amenities of home this is the place. Outdoor shower has amazing water pressure and is a must do. We were able to totally relax and recharge here. Marc was super quick with responses.
This cottage is a true Northern Ontario paradise! A classic Canadian cottage at its best. Niki provided quick and clear communication leading up to our stay, and she made it very easy to plan our weekend and meet her at the marina for our boat-ride to the cottage. The cottage itself is clean, spacious, and exceeded our expectations.
The sunset was amazing; the lake was perfect for swimming, fishing, and paddling; and the views from the wrap-around deck were beautiful. There are neighbours on both sides of the cottage that you can see from the dock, but up on the cottage property there is complete privacy. There are other cottages scattered throughout the lake, but overall, this is a very quiet lake compared to many others you might find in cottage country. If you have the chance, I highly recommend taking the canoe over to the Magnetawan river for some quiet, stunning nature, and excellent swimming.
Another feature that makes this cottage extra special, is the access to the hiking trail from the property that leads through the crown land to Northern Pike Lake. This is a treasure for anybody looking to do some serious fishing, or simply enjoy a day hike to explore the forest and watch the loons on their private lake. I cannot wait to plan a trip back. I miss the swimming and fishing already. The place is great and clean.
The balcony is amazing, we sat there most of the time when not on the water. Great fishing right off the dock. We would love to return. Honestly, this place is heaven. The location, the calm warm water, the activities onsite - you'll find yourself wishing you'd booked a week or two! Niki was a fabulous host. She was immediate with responses, and offered helpful tips for our stay. Let's not forget about the dock-to-dock pickup and drop off! The cottage is so beautiful and spacious, with a perfectly equipped kitchen.
The dock and mini beach are perfect for relaxation and splashing around. We can't wait to come back!! We spent 3 nights at Niki's place with our 4 kids ages 6 - 11 and it was fabulous, far exceeding our expectations.
The cottage is on a beautiful quiet lake, the property is very private. The wrap-around deck faces the lake in 2 directions, with amazing views of the lake and islands.
We spent our time swimming off the sandy beach and the dock the water pad is a perfect addition for kids canoeing, fishing and exploring. A short walk behind the cottage is Northern Pike Lake, an untouched pristine lake great for swimming and amazing for fishing. The cottage itself was charming and spacious, with all amenities. Niki met us punctually to boat us to the cottage, and was responsive and helpful before, during and after our stay.
Thank you Niki, we would definitely come back! This is quiet and great place to stay that offers a spectacular sunsets at Harris Lake. The cottage has plenty of room for our family party of eight. My daughter I have swim to the nearest islands and kids loved cliff jumping which was just a short boat ride.
Niki was a wonderful host. We had a blast and it was true cottage experience. Niki was an amazing host. Greeted us at the marina to pick us up and drop us off. The cottage location was absolutely spectacular.
Best view hands down! Sunrise was great and the sunsets were amazing. Water fantastic to swim in. Even got my stand-up paddle on: The cottage was very welcoming with all the amenities you needed. Fabulous kitchen for cooking, multiple bedrooms, laundry on site, and super clean! The large deck is where we spent most of our time relaxing and taking in the breath-taking view.. Next we will be renting a boat to go explore the area and fish.
Canoe available but boat would be better. There was a fire ban on when we went but next time a bonfire would make it extra amazing. The quiet of the lake and the neighbours was just fantastic. We will definitely be booking again!
My friends and I had a great experience at the cottage. It was modern, had great amenities, and was comfortable stay for a long weekend. We were all very satisfied and enjoyed the property waterfront. The grounds of the cottage are lovely, great fire pit and lovely little beach to access the water.
Also a good sized deck to sit out at and eat. The property had comfortable beds and everything you needed for the weekend. A beautiful view from a wall of windows greets you day and night, the decor is tasteful modern beach house and the large deck makes eating outside enjoyable. Lounging in the hammocks, kayaking and having the kids play at the private sandy beach was so peaceful.
If we had a boat they have a dock and launch right beside the cottage, so boating would be easy. The cottage is so well layed out and our kids loved the bunk beds. We miss it already! The cottage is lovely and the view is breathtaking. We heard loons at night and kayaked both the lagoon at the back and the bay in front. Everything was spotlessly clean when we arrived and well appointed. The owner was very quick to respond to us when we needed anything. Tips for anyone going there are - take your own charcoal, the nearest place you can buy any is Pointe au Baril which is 30 km away.
We brought a couple of fans for the bedrooms which we were glad we had with us, since the heat is quite exceptional this year, and be sure to bring plenty of bug spray or you won't enjoy sitting on the beautiful deck and watching the sun set. Overall, an awesome place to be for five days. A comfortable and clean cottage with a view of Georgian Bay.
Nice deck and easy to get to. Enjoyable two weeks for us. We used the kayaks and swam a lot. The owners should really think of installing blinds in the front of the cottage especially in the kitchen. It can get very hot on a warm sunny summer afternoon. Also, If you are looking for privacy, this cottage might not be for you. The cottage is gorgeous, with plenty of green space to kick a ball around, or something. It's exactly as described and was a good fit for 8 of us.
The hosts were very communicative and we had everything we needed. There's a drop-off point just on the way out of the community. This place was perfect. The location was beautiful and the cottage was very accommodating. The cottage was lovely. Spent New Years there with a group of friends and the cottage had everything we needed. Host was quick to respond and very accommodating.
The cottage was even better than described. What a blessing to get the opportunity to spend time at the cottage: A beautiful cottage in an idyllic setting this cottage has everything that you will need! If you are looking for a remote, quiet place to unwind while still being less than an hour away from town to shop, eat or take a boat tour of these beautiful islands, you will very much enjoy your stay. Annette's cottage is true to its description and we enjoyed our visit very much.
